August in the Cotswolds

Whether you are visiting the Cotswolds for a Summer holiday with the family or here to enjoy a romantic retreat for two, August is a brilliant time to explore the Cotswolds. From quirky traditions to heatwave-ready activities, here are some of our favourite things to do this month.

River Football

How do you make a quintessentially British game of football even more exciting? You make a river the pitch, of course! On Monday 29th August, wander over to Bourton-on-the-Water and watch two local teams compete against each other to be crowned the town champions, whilst knee deep in cold water. A tradition that has been alive for over 70 years, expect lots of laughter and plenty of falls - don’t forget to bring waterproof clothing if you plan to stand close to the action!

Open Air Cinema

This August, grab a cashmere throw and a bowl of popcorn and settle down under the stars for an evening of cinematic entertainment. From family-favourites like Encanto to old-school classics such as Grease, there’s a film for everyone. Located at various beautiful Cotswold locations and with a wide range of films, this is a Summer activity that’s not to be missed. Book your tickets and discover the full list of showings here.

Hartpury International Horse Trials

If you enjoy a more traditional country day out, why not head to Hartpury Horse Trials between 10th and 14th August. Watch the world’s finest international event riders race around the cross country course or marvel at the elegance of the dressage trials. And if horses aren’t your thing, there’s plenty more to see and do. From local food and drink stalls to live art performances and jewellery collections, there’s so much to see and do - you’ll want to stay for the whole weekend!

Cotswold Water Park

Whether you are a seasoned boatsman or simply looking for a new challenge this Summer, Cotswold Water Park will keep the whole family entertained for hours. Spanning over 40 square miles and 180 lakes, this scenic wetlands landscape is an idyllic place to cool down in warmer weather. For the more adventurous, why not give kayaking or SUP yoga a go? Or, if you are looking for a more laid back activity, take a leisurely swim in one of the lakes before settling down with a wood-fired pizza and a cold drink under the setting sun.

Walk the Cotswold Way

Running the length of the Cotswolds, the Cotswold Way is a wonderful way to explore the beautiful countryside and quaint villages that the Cotswolds has to offer. The National Trail is well-marked throughout, making it suitable for walkers of all abilities. With views of rolling hills, beech woodlands and honey-coloured villages, we think this is one of the most picturesque walks to do. Grab your walking boots, sun cream and four legged friends and let’s go!
